Whether you're new to scooter riding or an experienced rider, these tips will help you stay safe and enjoy your electric kick scooter.
1. Know and Follow Local Laws
Understanding local regulations is crucial for safe and legal riding. It's your responsibility to familiarize yourself with the rules regarding electric scooters in your area. Consider these questions:
- Is riding an electric scooter on roads or streets legal?
- What is the minimum age to ride an e-scooter on roads?
- Are there specifications limits, such as speed, motor power, battery capacity, or required lights?
- Do you need a license or to register the scooter before riding?
- What equipment is required for scooter riding?
- Which lane should you use when riding a scooter?
- What insurance options are available for the scooter and rider?
2. Wear a Helmet and Protective Gear
Wearing proper safety gear is essential. Since riding a scooter is different from cycling or driving, always wear a full-face helmet, especially when riding in unfamiliar areas or at speeds over 16 mph. Consider additional protection for knees, elbows, and hands, and wear comfortable, secure shoes.
3. Avoid Carrying Passengers or Hauling Trailers
Electric kick scooters are designed for a single rider. Carrying an extra passenger or hauling a trailer can lead to product failure, void warranties, and increase the risk of accidents.
4. Always Use Both Hands
For optimal control and to use all functions effectively, keep both hands on the handlebars. When lifting the scooter, fold it and use both hands—one on the stem and one on the deck—to avoid injury or damage.
5. Be Cautious of Folding and Spinning Parts
The folding and spinning parts of the scooter can cause injuries if not handled properly. Avoid touching the folding hinge and block, do not hold the kickstand or front and rear forks when lifting the scooter, and avoid wearing long skirts or loose clothing.
6. Manage Your Speed
Electric scooters can reach high speeds quickly. For beginners, use lower speed settings (level 1 of 3 or levels 1 & 2 of 5) for the first 500 miles. Even experienced riders should accelerate gradually.
7. Apply Brakes Carefully
Scooters have a different weight distribution compared to bicycles, making them more prone to flipping if the front wheel stops suddenly. Practice decelerating safely using both brakes and check their functionality before each ride.
8. Walk Up Steep Slopes
Scooters can typically handle slopes of 20° to 30°, but load, terrain, and temperature can affect performance. If your speed drops below 8 mph, get off and walk the scooter to prevent motor damage.
9. Slow Down When Going Downhill
Gravity can cause your scooter to speed up quickly downhill. Control your speed and ensure your brakes don’t overheat.
10. Avoid Extreme or Stunt Riding
Electric scooters are built for commuting and leisure rides. Extreme stunts like jumps, flips, and powerslides can damage the scooter and lead to accidents.
11. Protect from Water Damage
While our scooters are IPX6 water-resistant, avoid riding through deep water that can reach the motor hub. Store your scooter under cover to protect it from water damage.
12. Do Not Modify Without Permission
Customizing or upgrading your scooter without proper knowledge can be dangerous. Do not modify electronic components, replace parts with third-party items, or alter the frame without authorization from Eahora or Hiley.
By following these tips, you can enjoy a safe and enjoyable ride on your electric kick scooter.
